Australian authorities have uncovered a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam exploiting the government's official cybercrime reporting platform, ReportCyber. Fraudsters are impersonating police officers, using stolen personal data to create fake case files and convincing victims to surrender wallet credentials.

The scheme leverages ReportCyber's case reference number feature to add legitimacy. Scammers initiate contact by posing as Australian Federal Police officers, directing targets to fabricated investigations on the portal. At least 15 high-value thefts have been confirmed since October, with losses exceeding $2 million in digital assets.

This development marks an escalation in Australia's crypto crime landscape, where scammers now weaponize law enforcement infrastructure. The Australian Cyber Security Centre has issued urgent guidelines, warning citizens to verify all unsolicited communications claiming to involve ReportCyber cases.
